free software to access HFS/Mac file systems

For a limited time, Paragon Software is giving free licenses for HFS for Windows:

"HFS for Windows enables the use of Mac-formatted partitions in Windows operating systems...

"...Windows cannot read from and write to HFS+ partitions. This limits the ability to exchange or share files between Windows and Mac OS X file systems...

"Paragon HFS for Windows is designed to provide full (read and write) access to HFS+ partitions. It can be installed on all versions of Windows..."

---------------------------------------------

"HFS for Windows, the only software that lets you read Apple iPods, Macs and iPad data from a Windows PC...

"If you have an iPod you may probably know that it contains all your music inside some sly hidden folders. When you attach your iPod (excluding Touch models) to the system it can be seen as a simple Removable Flash Drive..."

Even if you don't need it now, do consider that having this software might be very helpful in the future...

Do the Taskbar Shuffle

Sometimes I have A LOT of things running on a computer. I multitask so much, using so many programs at the same time, I have used three computers...at the same. There can be a lot open in my Windows System Tray, and on my Taskbar...

It does work as advertised. But wait! There's more! "Tweak taskbar button grouping", meaning that you can move and arrange what's on you taskbar. ("And then, I heard the angels sing...")

There are "portable" versions: versions of Taskbar Shuffle you do not install into Windows. Just copy it to a storage device (hard drive, USB drive, etcetera) and execute the program.

("And if you act now...")

Its' designed for Windows Vista/XP/2000/NT/95/98. There is a 32-bit version, and a 64-bit version.

According to the Frequently Asked Questions section of the website: "...when I have Taskbar Shuffle running for several days and I randomly check, its memory usage is usually under 1mb (which is VERY low)...if you ever see it using much more than 4mb and that bothers you, simply exit and restart the program..."

And, it's free.

shout-out from TR Out Loud

Ya'll know how I likes (free) stuff. Sonja Thompson of TechRepublic sent a box o' goodies to me, so I put up a quick YouTube post "outting" her...and, at 6:23 into her video, she outted me:

"...a snippet of a YouTube video created by TR member S!ick. Now, S!ick is also the co-host of TechtalkRadio.com. Maybe S!ick will send me an official TechtalkRadio t-shirt, size medium?..."

Yahoo! Zimbra Desktop version 1

I had been testing the beta version of this product, and at this moment their website has the word "beta" on it...but it appears that "version 1" has been released: my installed software has updated to "version 1".

Amongst its many features:

Contacts-
import contacts as .csv files, or export contacts as .csv files
Syncs Zimbra, Yahoo! and Gmail contacts

Calendar-Syncs Zimbra, Yahoo! and Gmail calendars

Windows, Mac OS and Linux

mailbox data is kept on the server

Yahoo! Mail, Address Book, and Calendar Support
Gmail Mail, Address Book, and Calendar Support

It's being promoted as a replacement for Microsoft Outlook.

Per their blog, it's possible I have "Release candidate 1"; in the "About" window it states it is "Yahoo! Zimbra Desktop 1.0".

-----------------------------------

My experiences, so far...

In Zimbra, I added a contact to my Gmail account...that did not sync with my Google Contacts account.

Because I'm using the free version of Yahoo! Calendar, I cannot sync Zimbra with my online Yahoo! Calendar.

SpiralFrog

(I had written about them over a year ago, but recently there have been some updates to their service...)

SpiralFrog is a website that allows you to download video and music...for free! Legally. It's an ad-supported web site...

In the past, I needed to go to their website under 30 days to update my membership (by answering some survey questions). Now, it's every 60 days.

You can copy song to compatible portable players. To my surprise, my Palm LifeDrive and TX are on the list!

I've been very satisfied with their service. I haven't found every song I looked for, but it's not as if I have been paying for their service.

and incrementally copy files from the main hard drive, to a portable hard drive or another computer.

free wi-fi to go bye-bye???!!!

H.R. 3791

----------------------------------------------

...bill requires anyone with a wireless network that's open to the public to report any illegal images that pass through their network...

The SAFE bill, or Securing Adolescents From Exploitation-Online Act...anyone with an open Wi-Fi network will be required to comply with the law...

...if a passerby uses the access point to find or share child pornography. It could also cause some businesses that offer free Wi-Fi service to shut down their open networks.

The SAFE bill must still pass the U.S. Senate before becoming law, which could take months.

http://www.macobserver.com/article/2007/12/06.6.shtml

----------------------------------------------

...The bill doesn't require WiFi owners to police anything, merely 'stiffening the penalties' for those who make no effort to report obvious child pornography.
